Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional（CSN）, recently revealed to analysts that it would raise its flat steel and long steel material offers simultaneously from January 2020.
The steel price increase is necessary because Brazil's domestic steel price is nearly 4-6% lower than the imported steel price, and the real exchange rate against the US dollar has also weakened recently.
According to Luis Fernando Martinez, commercial director of CSN, the company will raise the steel price by about 10%. CSN's steel price negotiations with Brazilian carmakers are also in the final stages, with annual contract prices expected to rise 5% to 7.5%.
Two other Brazilian steel companies, Gerdau and usiminas, have informed customers that they will raise their domestic market prices. Analysts said ArcelorMittal is also expected to increase its January price.
Gerdau is ready to raise the price of all long steel products by 8% to 12% from next month. Usiminas plans to raise flat steel price another 5% on the basis of the increase announced in October.
Analysts commented that "the planned price adjustment will have a positive impact on the steel industry." Brazil's steel industry continues to maintain a positive outlook in the medium term, driven mainly by increased domestic consumption in Brazil, new infrastructure projects and high-end private construction activities, as well as improved demand for steel in China.
Although the U.S. may restart the 232 tariff on Brazil, the analyst predicted that the impact on Brazil's steel industry was limited, and he was still confident in the recovery of Brazil's steel industry.
