Effect of some alloying elements in submarine steel

Low carbon and nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium or nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, niobium series are mostly used for submarine steel. The main alloying elements added in steel are: carbon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, niobium, etc.

Carbon, as a strengthening element, can effectively improve the strength of steel, but can significantly reduce the toughness of steel and damage the weldability of steel. In the submarine steel of the world, the highest carbon content is 0.18%, and the lowest carbon content is 0.06%. The carbon content of 0.10% is usually used to obtain good comprehensive properties.

Nickel, an important alloying element in submarine steel, plays a weak role in solution strengthening, but can significantly improve the toughness of the steel. With the increase of iron content, the ductile brittle transition temperature of steel decreases greatly, which can ensure the good low temperature toughness and explosion resistance of submarine steel. It can also improve the hardenability and corrosion resistance of the steel. The shackle content of submarine steel is usually in the range of 2.0% to 5.25%.

Vanadium is a strong carbonitride forming element. The strength of submarine steel can be improved by precipitation strengthening, but the toughness of steel can be lost at the same time. Therefore, the vanadium content in submarine steel is usually less than 0.10%.
