Requirements for chemical composition of ABS AH36 steel for Offshore Engineering

The main factors affecting the properties of ABS AH36 steel are chemical composition, melting and casting, rolling and heat treatment process, among which sulfur and phosphorus content directly affect the thickness direction properties of ABS AH36 steel plate. Sulfur is the most serious element in segregation of continuous casting billets. Sulphur can cause hot brittleness of ABS AH36 steel, resulting in cracking when ABS AH36 steel is forging at high temperature. A lot of porosity are generated during welding.

Phosphorus is a high segregation element next to sulphur in continuous casting billet of ABS AH36 steel, and the diffusion rate of phosphorus in iron solid solution is very small, so the segregation of phosphorus is difficult to eliminate, which seriously affects the properties of ABS AH36 steel. Phosphorus is dissolved in ferrite in the form of solid solution, which is very brittle. The formed phosphorus-rich zone promotes the brittleness of ABS AH36 steel and reduces its plasticity, toughness and weldability. During hot working, it is easy to cause cracking of ABS AH36 steel, and cracks are easily produced during welding. Phosphorus is an element that reduces the surface tension of ABS AH36 steel. With the increase of phosphorus content, the surface tension of molten ABS AH36 steel decreases significantly, which reduces the crack resistance of ABS AH36 steel.

Therefore, there are strict requirements for sulfur and phosphorus content in ABS AH36 steel plates for offshore platforms, among which the sulfur content is strictly controlled.
