Welding quality is an important consideration when A36 steel is used in marine structures. Consistent material characteristics allow fabricators to establish repeatable welding procedures for different sections of a vessel, provided that the selected grade and thickness are permitted by the applicable design and classification requirements.
For A36 steel plate, commonly used arc welding processes can be applied according to the joint design and production requirements. Shielded metal arc welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding may each be selected for suitable applications, with the welding procedure determined by plate thickness, joint configuration, consumables, and required weld quality.
For ordinary plate thicknesses and appropriate welding conditions, extensive preheating may not be necessary. However, this should not be treated as a universal rule. Thicker sections, restrictive joints, low ambient temperatures, or specific welding procedures may require preheating and controlled interpass temperatures to reduce the risk of welding defects.
Assembly sequence is equally important when working with A36 steel. Tack welding, joint positioning, and the order in which structural sections are joined can influence dimensional accuracy and residual stress. For larger assemblies, a planned welding sequence can help control distortion and reduce the need for corrective work after welding.
In vessel construction, these practices may be applied to suitable hull sections, deck assemblies, supports, and internal structures. Final welding procedures should be established according to the approved welding procedure specification, applicable classification rules, plate thickness, and project requirements.
