The service life of E36 steel components depends not only on their mechanical properties but also on the environment in which they operate. Moisture, airborne salts, industrial pollutants, and chemical exposure can gradually damage unprotected carbon steel. A suitable corrosion protection strategy should therefore be established during the design and fabrication stages.
Selecting a Suitable Protection System
Protective paint systems are commonly used to limit contact between steel and corrosive elements. Depending on the service environment, a system may include a compatible primer, an intermediate coat, and a weather-resistant finish. Epoxy coatings are often selected for barrier protection, while polyurethane finishes may be used where weathering and appearance are important.
Hot-dip galvanizing may be suitable for certain fabricated components, provided that their dimensions, steel chemistry, fabrication details, and applicable specifications support the process. It should not be assumed that every plate assembly is suitable for galvanizing without prior review.
For structures in severe marine or submerged environments, the protection strategy may require additional measures. Cathodic protection can be used in suitable systems, but its design must account for the structure, electrolyte, coating condition, and applicable marine requirements.
Surface Preparation and Application Quality
Coating performance depends heavily on surface preparation. Oil, rust, mill scale, and other contaminants should be removed to the level specified for the selected coating system. Abrasive blasting may be required to achieve the appropriate cleanliness and surface profile.
Application conditions also matter. Temperature, humidity, surface moisture, and the interval between preparation and coating can affect adhesion and finish quality. Coating thickness should be checked against the project specification, with damaged areas repaired using an approved method.
Design and Maintenance for Longer Service Life
Corrosion control begins with structural detailing. Drainage paths, accessible inspection areas, and designs that avoid unnecessary water traps can reduce the risk of localized corrosion. Crevices and inaccessible interfaces deserve particular attention.
Periodic inspections help identify coating damage, rust formation, and areas requiring maintenance before deterioration becomes extensive. Inspection intervals should reflect the operating environment and the consequences of structural damage.
Effective E36 steel protection combines correct material identification, appropriate surface preparation, a compatible coating system, and planned maintenance. The final approach should be selected according to the actual grade specification and the conditions the component will encounter throughout its service life.
GB T 5312 Carbon and carbon-manganese steel seamless steel tubes and pipes are mainly for ship use, also known as shipbuilding steel pipes. Under GB T 5312, there are mainly 5 steel grades: grade 320, 360, 410, 460 and 490. Each grade covers three levels: I, II, III.
Angle steel, commonly known as angle iron, is a long strip of steel whose sides are perpendicular to each other. There are equal angle steels and unequal angle steels. The two sides of equal angle steel are equal in width. The unequal angle steel is also known as L shape profile steel.
Flat bar steel can be produced according to the user's needs, with fixed thickness, width and length. It can reduce the cutting process for users, reduce the consumption of labor and materials, and also reduce the processing loss of raw materials.
