An ice-class research vessel incorporated EH36 steel into selected hull plating, deck structures, and internal bulkheads as part of its structural material system. The vessel was designed for operation in cold waters, where the structural design had to account for environmental conditions beyond those encountered by conventional commercial vessels.
The hull represented one of the most demanding areas of the project. During operation in ice-affected waters, sections of the vessel can experience additional local and global loading. EH36 steel plate was therefore specified for designated structural areas according to the vessel's engineering calculations and classification requirements.
The material was also used in selected deck and internal structures. Plate thicknesses and structural arrangements were established according to the loads and functions of individual components rather than applying one standard configuration throughout the vessel.
Cold-weather operation also required attention to the material's specified impact properties. The selection of EH36 steel formed part of a broader design approach that included hull geometry, structural reinforcement, welding procedures, protective systems, and inspection requirements for the intended service environment.
After construction, the research vessel completed inspection and sea trials before entering operation. The trial program provided an opportunity to verify the vessel's structural and operational behavior under the conditions defined by the project.
